Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, ‘We are the party that did not fly and sit down. We came to this Bangladesh by fighting and struggling.’ He said, ‘BNP is the party that is like a phoenix bird. Many attempts have been made to destroy BNP, to break BNP, but no one has been able to break BNP. Those who tortured, tortured, disappeared, killed—they are the ones who are finished. They are the ones who have fled.’
Mirza Fakhrul said these things in his opening speech at the inauguration of the district BNP conference at the old stadium in Kishoreganj city on Saturday (September 20) afternoon.
Mirza Fakhrul said, ‘Martyr President Ziaur Rahman gave Bangladesh a new existence. He established Bangladesh. He laid the foundation stone to turn Bangladesh into a modern Bangladesh. Today’s conference is not an ordinary conference. After 15 years, after the torture at the hands of fascists, after the destruction of democracy, when we were able to create a new opportunity through the student-public movement, through the countless sacrifices of BNP, a conference to utilize that opportunity. One thing must be remembered, we got this opportunity today in exchange for a lot of blood, in exchange for a lot of lives, in exchange for a lot of sacrifices.’
The BNP Secretary General said, ‘Today, many conspiracies are going on. False accusations are being made. Propaganda is being spread against BNP. This BNP has given everything that was good in the last 47 years. When martyred President Ziaur Rahman was martyred, killed by the enemies of this Bangladesh, then everyone thought that Bangladesh is gone, BNP is gone. Shaheed Zia was killed at the Circuit House in Chittagong. But that flag, the flag of independence-sovereignty, the flag of democracy was picked up by his wife. Who has never done politics. She picked up the flag and started singing songs of democracy all over Bangladesh like a poet. And with that song of democracy, she fought with the dictator Hussain Muhammad Ershad for 9 years, she fought on the streets. That great leader Begum Khaleda Zia, she started changing Bangladesh. When she came to power, she took the production and development rate to such a level that Bangladesh was called the Emerging Tiger. At that time, new investments were being made in Bangladesh. People were living in peace. She arranged for free education for girls up to class 12. She arranged for women to work in various jobs in the police, Ansar, everywhere.’
Mirza Fakhrul said, ‘We are the party that we did not join by flying. We came to this Bangladesh by fighting and struggling. Our leader President Ziaur Rahman liberated this country. That is our pride, the year 1971. Our leader gave us democracy. Our leader took us to parliament from the front. And our leader was brought to One-Eleven by a planned conspiracy, tortured physically and mentally, and exiled him. That leader has fought again with the dream of democracy. Today, the opportunity has come to bring back our leader Tarique Rahman and convince him to take the responsibility of running the state through an election.’
The district BNP conference is being held after almost 9 years under the chairmanship of District BNP President Md. Shariful Alam. General Secretary Mazharul Islam conducted the conference. BNP Chairperson’s Advisor Abdus Salam, Joint Secretary General of the party’s National Executive Committee Habib-un Nabi Khan Sohel, Emran Saleh Prince, Treasurer Rashiduzzaman Millat, Joint Organizing Secretary Shah Wares Ali Mamun, Abu Wahab Akand, Member Laila Begum, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Iqbal also spoke at the event.
